Harrogate Grammar School Turf Cutting

The new Sixth Form Pavilion at Harrogate Grammar School has started on site this week, and the occasion was marked by a turf cutting ceremony on Tuesday.

The pavilion designed by Bowman Riley Architects of Skipton, will provide modern and flexible accommodation including seven teaching rooms, a large practical area and a learning theatre with retractable seating.

Contractor Clegg Construction (Northern) has begun the initial groundworks for the project, which has an anticipated completion date of August 2010 and is being funded by the Learning and Skills Council.

Director Laurence Teeney says "Bowman Riley Architects are proud to be working with Harrogate Grammar School on this project. The school is one of the top educational providers in the area and we feel that our innovative design compliments this position."

Steve Howell, the School Business Manager says "The Grammar School is delighted to have secured funding to enhance its facilities for students. The new sixth form block will allow us to consolidate our site and we will remove several temporary buildings and improve our car-parking. The learning theatre designed by Bowman Riley Architects will be a magnificent addition to the school alongside modern well-equipped teaching rooms. We are very impressed with the flair and attention to detail that our architects have brought to the project."

The Sixth Form Pavilion will provide:

  • A learning theatre; which will be a flexible event space designed to meet the needs of the performing arts, media and 300 seat lecture theatre and also exhibitions and events. This space will have full AVIT (audio visual information technology facilities), stage lighting and storage.
  • Teaching accommodation; providing seven spaces on two floors plus a large practical area at ground floor level which may be divided into two smaller teaching areas when required.
